                        Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to sign up for a phone?
No.  While each student may sign up for telephone service, no one is required to do so

Should I share a phone with my roommate?
Yes.  Sharing a phone will save you money.  However, both of you may have your own phones if you want.  Remember, if you do share a phone and your name is on the bill, you are responsible for any and all charges

What will it cost me each month?
You will have a one-time connection fee of $33.00; then about $14.00 per month for basic charges whether or not you place any calls.

What happens during the summer?
You will need to disconnect your phone online before your last day in residence.  If you remain as a student worker you have to disconnect your old number and pay the connection fee for your new number, unless you are remaining in the same room.

What happens between semesters?
No changes need to be made unless you switch rooms.  If you do make changes you have to disconnect your old number and pay the connection fee for your new number.

What number do I get?
Find the phone jack with the red dot next to it.  This is a priority phone number that can be hooked up in 1-2 days.  The other phone number can be hooked up, but will take 1-2 weeks.

Can I have the same number as last year?
Yes, as long as you are in the same room and bed.  However, you will still need to apply for phone service and pay the connect charge to SBC again.

Who do I select for local toll calls?
Select SBC for your local toll carrier.  Simpson University has an agreement with them for local toll calls.

How do I get long distance service?
You need to decide on a company, then let SBC know on your application, and contact the long distance company yourself to start long distance service.  However, you do not need long distance if you use calling cards or a cell phone for long distance.

Who do I contact for repair problems?
Call 611

What is wire pro?
A monthly charge (approximately $3.00 per month) that makes it the responsibility of SBC to repair the phone line all the way to your room.

Why should I pay for wire pro?
Without wire pro, SBC will charge you a minimum of $65.00 for any repair needed on your line.

How long will it take to get my phone?
If you choose the jack with the red dot 1-2 business days, otherwise 1-2 weeks

How do I know my phone is hooked up?
You will have a dial tone and be able to complete a call.

Who do I contact for billing problems?
Call SBC toll free at (888) 700-5533

Who will have access to my phone number?
Your phone number will be published in the directory and may be given to outside callers, unless you have requested through the registrar's office that it not be given out.  If you do keep your number private, it will only be available to Simpson University faculty and staff.
